One of the most used functions in everyday life is the smartphone keyboard. Whether it’s texting, making a shopping list, or even editing a study assignment. If you agree, in this tutorial I’ll show you how fast it is to use the iPhone keyboard as a trackpad and quickly place the cursor on the point you want. If you own a Samsung Galaxy, this tip is for you too!

Editing text is not that easy on a mobile phone. If you’ve ever followed keynote presentations of new software features from Apple and Google, you may remember the moments when text editing features are mentioned and the audience applauds fervently. Well, this is because on a limited screen, any keyboard enhancement is always welcome!

Depending on the size of the screen and even the fingers of the person typing a text on the phone, some tricks are real life hacks. And one magic tip that has helped me optimize article editing on iPhone is to use the keyboard as a trackpad. So this is my tip today! As mentioned before, if you own a Galaxy device, you can also use the touchpad feature of the keyboard in the Samsung One UI.

How to turn iPhone keyboard into trackpad

The only requirement here is to use the Apple keyboard as the default. So when you open an application that allows you to enter and edit text, you can turn the smartphone’s keyboard into a trackpad. To do this, simply follow these steps:

Launch the iPhone keyboard. Long press the space bar. Wait for the letters to disappear. Move your finger on the keyboard to position the cursor at the desired edit point. That is it! Your iPhone keyboard has become a trackpad!

And of course this is not a feature unique to iOS as manufacturers like Samsung offer the same feature. As with the iPhone, you have to use the Samsung keyboard by default. No mystery, just follow roughly the same path as described above:

Launch the Samsung keyboard on your Galaxy. Long press the space bar. Wait for the “cursor control” symbol to appear on the screen. Move your finger on the keyboard to position the cursor at the desired edit point. That is it! You’ve turned your Samsung keyboard into a trackpad!

Personally, I found the process on the iOS keyboard to be more accurate than on the Samsung keyboard, plus Apple provides a larger keyboard space tracking field to move the cursor in text.

If you use the Google keyboard (Gboard) in addition to the standard iPhone and Samsung Galaxy keyboards, you can also use the spacebar as a touchpad. The movement is quite limited though, as you can only move the cursor from right to left on the same line.
