Google’s Android 13 mobile operating system will make it easier for users to avoid junk notification bombardments, by forcing apps to ask for permission to send them in the first place.

The latest Android 13 developers preview is available for Pixel devices, offering Android fans a feature iOS device owners have relied on for years.

If Google pushes the feature to the consumer version of the software, Android users won’t have to dig into settings to manually disable or restrict notifications from avid app developers.

The feature works similarly to its iOS counterpart in that users get a persistent notification asking them to allow an app to send you notifications.

“Apps targeting Android 13 will now need to request notification permission from the user before posting notifications,” said Dave Burke, a VP of engineering for Android, in a blog post explaining the change to developers.

In addition to the new notification upgrade, Google has confirmed that Android 13 will have Bluetooth Low Energy Audio, promising more efficient data transfer with higher quality.

“It is designed to allow users to receive high-fidelity audio without sacrificing battery life and to seamlessly switch between different use cases that were not possible with Bluetooth Classic,” added Burke.

There is also support for MIDI 2.0 hardware over a USB connection. “This updated standard offers features such as higher resolution for controllers, better support for non-Western intonation, and more expressive performance with per-note controllers,” he says.

Google is still in the developer preview phase for Android 13, with public versions not available until the summer. We can expect a lot more about what Android 13 has to offer at Google I/O on May 11.
